Plants usually glabrous, rarely pubescent. Leaves 3–5-lobed, middle lobes ovate, widely ovate, or elliptic to widely obovate, apex rounded, blunt, or obtuse.
Phenology: Flowering Mar–Jun.
Habitat: Blackwater floodplains and other wet ground along streams, swamps
Elevation: 0–100 m
Distribution
Ala., Fla., Ga., La., Miss., N.C., S.C., Tex., Va.
Discussion
L. E. McKinney (1992) did not recognize var. heterophylla; D. B. Ward (2006) provided convincing evidence to recognize it, but he chose to do so as var. esculenta (Elliott ex Greene) D. B. Ward, an illegitimate name.
