Discussion
The area occupied by subsp. schottii in southern Arizona and northern Sonora corresponds to the northernmost distribution limit of Zapoteca formosa. Intergradation of leaf characters between subspp. schottii and rosei (Wiggins) H. M. Hernández is evident in Sonora, making difficult the determination at the subspecies level.
