Plants 5.5–21.5 cm. Leaves: basal: petiole 2.6–13.8 cm; blade usually narrowly to broadly ovate, sometimes oblong-lanceolate to ± orbiculate or ± elliptic, 1.7–5.9(–7.3) × 0.8–3.3 cm, length 1.1–3 times width, base ± truncate to subcordate, margins ± crenate to serrate or entire; cauline similar to basal except: petiole 1.7–11.5 cm; blade 2.3–5.8(–6.7) × 1.1–3.5 cm. Peduncles 4.4–16.5 cm. Lowest petal 12–15(–18) mm. Capsules 6–11 mm. Seeds dark brown. 2n = 36.

Habitat: Vernally moist slopes and banks, meadows, grassy areas, open forests, sagebrush, shade or open areas

Discussion
In British Columbia, var. praemorsa is known only from southeastern Vancouver Island and adjacent Saltspring Island (G. W. Douglas and M. Ryan 1998).
