Herbs, annual, 2–5(–8) dm, finely pubescent, appearing gla­brous. Cotyledons decid­uous, petiolate. Stems ascending or erect, branched or unbranched. Leaves cauline; petiole flattened and leafletlike, 3–10 cm; leaflets 5–8, blades 20–40 × 2–5 mm, apex usually truncate, adaxial surface glabrous. Peduncles 3–10 cm; bracts persistent, 2–5 mm. Racemes 6–35 cm; flowers loosely spirally arranged. Pedicels 2–4 mm. Flowers 8–13 mm; calyx 3–4 mm, lobes ± equal, abaxial lobe entire or shallowly cleft, 2.5–3 mm, adaxial lobe deeply cleft, 1.5–2 mm; corolla banner and wings magenta, banner spot white or yellowish, becoming dark magenta, keel stout, blunt, lower and upper margins ciliate from claw to middle. Legumes ±3 cm, pubescent. Seeds 6–8.


Phenology: Flowering spring (Mar–May).
Habitat: Openings in coastal sage scrub, chaparral, oak woodlands, burned areas.
Elevation: 0–1200 m.

Discussion

Lupinus truncatus is known in the flora area from San Cruz County southward in the Central and South Coast regions; the South Coast, Transverse, and Peninsular ranges; and the Channel Islands.
