Herbs 5.5–12(–15) dm, caudex subterranean. Stems hollow at base. Leaflets 9–17, blades 60–150 mm, surfaces abaxially ± strigose, adax­ially glabrous or puberulent. Flowers: upper keel mar­gins glabrous. 2n = 48, 96.


Phenology: Flowering May–Aug.
Habitat: Moist to mesic meadows, riverbars, stream banks, seashores, clearings, roadsides, glades, open forests.
Elevation: 0–3000 m.

Discussion

Populations of var. polyphyllus in eastern North America (Ontario and eastward in Canada, and Minnesota and eastward in the United States) have resulted from horticultural introductions.
