Bracts with short to long, spreading hairs. Calyces with appressed to spreading hairs; appendages usually purplish, 1–2 mm. Corolla lavender to purple, becoming translucent; wings persistent, broadly elliptic, lower and upper margins ciliate near claw; lower keel margins ciliate near claw. Legumes erect or spreading. 2n = 48.
Phenology: Flowering late spring.
Habitat: Desert washes, sandy or gravelly areas.
Elevation: 100–1700 m.
Discussion
Variety horizontalis occurs in desert regions east of Inner South Coast Ranges (the western side of San Joaquin Valley) and the eastern Mojave Desert.
