Herbs annual, glabrous. Stems not winged, erect, sprawling or climbing, basally branched 1–several times, 2–5 dm. Leaves 0.5–1.5 cm; tendrils bristlelike to 4 cm, often unbranched; stipules linear, 10–15 × 2–10 mm, much smaller than leaflets; leaflets 2, blades linear, 20–90 × 2–10 mm, surfaces glabrous. Inflorescences 1-flowered, 1–2 cm, prolonged beyond flower into a bristle. Flowers 6–10 mm; calyx lobes subequal, lateral lobes lanceolate, longer than tube; corolla reddish orange, banner erect, blade longer than or equal to claw, wings equal to keel; ovary glabrous. Legumes 40–60 × 4–6 mm, longitudinal venation prominent. 2n = 14.
Phenology: Flowering Apr–Jul.
Habitat: Roadsides, pastures, waste areas.
Elevation: 0–500 m.

Introduced; B.C., Calif., Oreg., Wash., Europe, introduced also in Mexico, Asia, Pacific Islands (New Zealand), Australia.
