Basal leaves 10–40(–50) cm; sheathing bases ± strigose; lateral leaflets 3 or 4 per side, broadly elliptic to ovate, 15–60 mm, unlobed or cleft 1/6–1/4 to midrib, ultimate teeth 30–60; terminal leaflet 20–90 mm. Flowers: epicalyx bractlets entire or toothed; hypanthium interior glabrous; sepals not red-mottled adaxially; filaments 1–2 × 0.5–1.5 mm; carpels 80–200(–220); styles 2–3 mm.

Habitat: Coastal scrub, chaparral communities
Elevation: 0–400 m

Discussion

Variety frondosa occurs mainly in the central coastal ranges from Alameda and Contra Costa counties south to Monterey and San Benito counties.
