Halenia rothrockii

Herbs annual, 1–5 dm. Stems usually 1, erect, simple or short-branched. Leaves: basal blades spatulate to elliptic-lanceolate; cauline blades linear, 1.5–4 cm × 2–5 mm. Inflorescences 4–27-flowered cymes or thyrses, terminal cluster often umbelloid, plus smaller inflorescences sometimes present on branches. Flowers: calyx 5–14 mm, lobes lanceolate, apex acuminate; corolla yellow, 5–12 mm, lobes ovate, apex acute to acuminate, spurs proximally nearly horizontal, distally ± upcurved, (3–)5–8(–16) mm.
Phenology: Flowering late summer–fall.
Habitat: Open coniferous woods, mountain meadows.
Elevation: 1900–3000 m.
Distribution
Ariz., N.Mex., Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Sonora).
Discussion
The name Halenia recurva (J. E. Smith) C. K. Allen has often been applied to this species, but its basionym, Swertia recurva J. E. Smith, is typified by a specimen of the South American species H. asclepiadea (Kunth) G. Don (J. S. Pringle 2008).
