Erythrina flabelliformis

Shrubs or small trees, 0.6–2[–6] m; branches erect, glabrous. Leaflets thin-herbaceous, blades broadly ovate to depressed ovate, unlobed, terminal blade (3–)5–7.5 × (3–)4–11 cm, base truncate to slightly obtuse. Inflorescences appearing before or with developing leaves, flowers and leaves on same stem, 25–80-flowered. Flowers: calyx tube short-obconic, 6–8 mm, apex truncate and unlobed; corolla banner elliptic-oblong, 4–7 cm, folded and pseudotubular, wings and keel reduced, not protruding from calyx. Legumes 12–25(–35) cm. Seeds 5–10, red to orange-red or orange with black marking.
Phenology: Flowering Apr–Jul.
Habitat: Grasslands, mesquite-grasslands, mesquite-Opuntia-Agave communities, oak-grasslands, chaparral, oak-beargrass-yucca, oak-juniper woodlands, riparian areas, hackberry communities, hills, flats, rocky slopes.
Elevation: 1000–1800 m.
Distribution
Ariz., N.Mex., Mexico (Aguascalientes, Baja California, Chihuahua, Durango, Jalisco, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Sonora, Zacatecas).
Discussion
In the flora area, Erythrina flabelliformis is found mostly in mountains of south-central and southeastern Arizona and southwestern and southern New Mexico.
