Herbs (0.8–)1–3(–4.8) dm. Stems branched from base. Leaves linear to broadly lanceolate, 1.2–4.8 cm, (0–)3(–5)-lobed, apex acute, rarely obtuse. Inflorescences 2–12 × 2–3.5 cm; bracts distally red, scarlet, or pale orange, rarely yellow, 3-lobed, apex acute to rounded, central lobe sometimes expanded. Calyces green to yellow, lobe apices red to yellow, 13–15 mm; abaxial and adaxial clefts (4–)5–8(–10) mm, 33% of calyx length, lateral 3–5(–7) mm, 10–25% of calyx length; lobe apex acute, rarely obtuse. Corollas 16–22 mm; tube 11–13 mm; beak 6–10 mm. 2n = 48.


Phenology: Flowering Jun–Aug(–Sep).
Habitat: Dry rocky slopes, flats, open montane forests to alpine, granitic substrates.
Elevation: 1800–3600 m.

Discussion

Variety breweri is found in California in the high Sierra Nevada and in the mountains of adjacent Nevada. Hybrids with Castilleja chromosa and C. miniata var. miniata have both been found in Inyo County, California.
