Astragalus deanei

Plants perennial, coarse, (15–)30–60 cm, sparsely hairy or glabrous; from superficial caudex. Stems erect or ascending, fistulose, glabrous. Leaves 8–18 cm; stipules distinct, (2–)3.5–7.5 mm, submembranous; leaflets (19 or)21–29, blades ovate-oblong to lanceolate or lanceolate-elliptic, (4–)8–21 mm, apex obtuse or truncate, usually apiculate, surfaces sparsely strigose. Peduncles erect or incurved-ascending, (6–)12–20 cm. Racemes (13–)18–25-flowered, flowers spreading or weakly ascending; axis (5–)9–16 cm in fruit; bracts 1.5–2.5 mm; bracteoles (0–)2. Pedicels 0.9–3.5 mm. Flowers (9.5–)12–15 mm; calyx purplish, campanulate, (4.7–)5–7.2 mm, sparsely strigulose, tube (2.7–)3–4.5 mm, lobes subulate, 1.8–2.7 mm; corolla whitish, drying ochroleucous; banner recurved through 45°, 12–15 mm; keel 8–10.5 mm, apex blunt and narrowly deltate. Legumes ascending, pale green and purplish-tinged becoming stramineous, straight or slightly incurved, obliquely semi ovoid-ellipsoid, bladdery-inflated, somewhat obcompressed, (15–)20–28 × (8–)10–15(–18) mm, beak prominent, papery, sparsely strigulose. Seeds 29–40.
Phenology: Flowering Mar–May.
Habitat: Open, brushy slopes, in oak chaparral, on recently burned hillsides.
Elevation: 200–400 m.

Discussion
Astragalus deanei is restricted to tributaries of the upper Otay and Sweetwater rivers, southwestern San Diego County.
