Astragalus cutleri

Plants sometimes flowering first year, forming large, bushy clumps, 10–30(–35) cm, sparsely strigulose to glabrate; from superficial caudex. Stems ascending to erect, sparsely strigulose to glabrate. Leaves 3–13 cm; stipules 2–6.5 mm; leaflets 5–17(or 19), blades elliptic to lanceolate, oblanceolate, or obovate, 3–17(–20) mm, apex acute to obtuse or apiculate, surfaces strigulose or glabrous abaxially, glabrous adaxially. Peduncles 2.5–10 cm. Racemes 5–9-flowered; bracts 1.5–2.5 mm; bracteoles 2. Pedicels 1.5–2.5 mm. Flowers 15–16 mm; calyx pale purple or whitish, cylindric, (7.3–)7.5–8.5(–9) mm, sparsely black-strigose, tube 5.9–6.7 mm, lobes subulate, 1.3–1.7(–2.3) mm; corolla white or tinged purplish (or drying purplish); banner recurved through 40–45°. Legumes ascending to erect, greenish sometimes suffused with purple, oblong-ellipsoid, inflated, 14–18 × 9–11 mm, thinly cartilaginous, glabrous; unilocular; stipe 3–3.5 mm. Seeds 20–38.
Phenology: Flowering Apr–May.
Habitat: Saltbush and blackbrush communities, on Permian Formations.
Elevation: 1100–1300 m.

Discussion
Astragalus cutleri, restricted to San Juan County, was earlier thought to be an annual, but more recent collections demonstrated that it is at least a short-lived perennial.
