Plants from shallow subterra­nean or superficial caudex; dis­tal leaves foliose. Leaves: stip­ules connate at proximal nodes, usually distinct at distal nodes; leaflets 9–15(or 17), blade sur­faces glabrous adax­ially; ter­minal leaflet jointed or con­tinuous with rachis. Flowers: calyx 3.2–4.4 × 2.3–2.8 mm; corolla usually pale purple, tinged purplish, or with maculate keel tip, rarely all concolorous; banner 12–15.5 mm. Legumes faintly mottled, semi-ovoid or semi-ellipsoid, 20–35 mm, 6–12 mm wide when pressed; stipe (4–)5–8 mm. Seeds 10–16.


Phenology: Flowering May–Jul.
Habitat: Rocky and gravelly slopes, canyon terraces, ledges of basalt.
Elevation: 300–600 m.

Discussion

Variety flexilipes is known from the lower Salmon and Little Salmon rivers, Adams and Idaho counties in Idaho, and Asotin County in Washington.
