|discussion=<p><i>Stewartia malacodendron</i> is uncommon and of conservation concern in some portions of its range. It is available through the horticultural trade. It is most easily distinguished from <i>S. ovata</i> by the petiole wings not enclosing the winter buds, much smaller bracts, different fruit shape, and lustrous seeds. Due to incorrectly identified herbarium specimens, some online databases show a much broader distribution for the species.</p><!--
