Stems simple, sometimes branched, to 8(–12) cm; branches 1 or 2 pairs, from basal cauline nodes; cauline internode lengths 2–3 times subtending leaves. Leaves: blade obovate or orbiculate, 2–6(–8) mm, base cuneate, margins incised-crenate to incised-dentate, teeth 1–3(or 4) pairs, apices obtuse or acute. Inflorescences capitate, beginning at node 4 or 5; proximal internode lengths 0.5–1(–1.5) times bracts; bracts green or with slight bronze tinge or suffused with purple adaxially especially near margins, broader than leaves, ovate to obovate, length not more than 2 times width, 3–7 mm, base cuneate, surfaces hirsute and hairs eglandular, teeth 2–4 pairs, as long as wide, apices obtuse or acute, sinuses between teeth rounded or acute. Flowers: calyx lobes falcate, apex obtuse; corolla brownish purple, purple, or lilac with darker lines, abaxial side of tube and base of abaxial lip sometimes yellow, 3–4 mm, lips equal. Capsules obovate or broadly elliptic, 4–4.5 mm, apex emarginate.
