Stems erect, sometimes ascending, 30–80 cm, glabrous, slightly glaucous. Leaves glabrous, slightly glaucous; basal and proximal cauline 35–110 × 3–11 mm, blade oblanceolate to lanceolate, base tapered, margins entire, apex obtuse to acute; cauline 3–6 pairs, sessile or proximals short-petiolate, 27–85 × 1–6 mm, blade linear, base tapered, apex acute, rarely obtuse. Thyrses ± secund, 13–30 cm, axis glabrous, verticillasters 5–10, cymes 1- or 2(or 3)-flowered; proximal bracts linear, 5–30 × 1–2 mm; peduncles and pedicels ascending to erect, glabrous. Flowers: calyx lobes ovate to lanceolate, 3.5–6 × 1.8–2.4 mm, margins erose, glabrous; corolla red to scarlet or orange, rarely yellow, without nectar guides, bilaterally symmetric, strongly bilabiate, salverform, 30–40 mm, glabrous internally, tube 5–7 mm, throat 4–6 mm diam., not constricted at orifice, rounded abaxially, abaxial lobes spreading to reflexed, adaxial lobes projecting, galeate; stamens exserted (but concealed by projecting adaxial lip), pollen sacs opposite, proximal 1/4–1/3 indehiscent, 1.6–2 mm, sides glabrous, sutures papillate; staminode 11–14 mm, included, tip straight, glabrous; style 20–28 mm, exserted. Capsules 7–10 × 4–6 mm. 2n = 16.

Calif., Mexico (Baja California).

Discussion

Penstemon labrosus is known from the Peninsular and Transverse ranges of southern California and mountain ranges of Baja California. In California, populations have been documented in Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Ventura counties.
