Plants densely matted. Stems prostrate. Leaflets: blade surfaces silky-strigulose or villosulous adaxially. Corollas whitish, keel maculate, banner faintly purple-veined; banner 5.2–6.2 mm. Legumes subsymmetrically lenticular, 3.5–5 mm.
Phenology: Flowering Aug–Sep.
Habitat: Stony ridgecrests above timberline.
Elevation: 3000–3400 m.

Discussion
The ashy canescence results in the grayish hue to the tufts or mats of var. nubilus, which is endemic to Custer and Valley counties. D. Isely (1998) questioned whether this variety is any more significant than other local phases.
