Annuals, fibrous-rooted or filiform-taprooted. Stems erect to ascending, straight or geniculate at nodes, usually many-branched, 4-angled, 5–17 cm, sparsely sessile- to subsessile-glandular, hairs 0.05–0.2 mm, gland-tipped. Leaves cauline, basal not persistent; petiole 8–20 mm; blade palmately veined, broadly ovate to lanceolate, 8–25 × 5–19 mm, base cuneate, margins dentate to coarsely denticulate, apex acute to obtuse, surfaces sparsely sessile- to subsessile-glandular, hairs 0.05–0.2 mm, gland-tipped. Flowers herkogamous, 1–10, from proximal to distal nodes. Fruiting pedicels 10–22 mm, sparsely sessile- to subsessile-glandular, hairs 0.05–0.2 mm, gland-tipped. Fruiting calyces tubular-campanulate, not or weakly inflated, 6–8 mm, margins distinctly toothed or lobed, minutely, sparsely stipitate-glandular or glabrous, lobes pronounced, erect. Corollas deep yellow, sometimes with small white patches, abaxial limb with a few brownish dots, bilaterally symmetric, strongly bilabiate; tube-throat broadly funnelform, 8–12(–14) mm, exserted beyond calyx margin; lobes obovate-oblong, apex rounded to truncate. Styles glabrous. Anthers included, glabrous. Capsules included, 5–6 mm.


Phenology: Flowering Jun–Jul.
Habitat: Basalt outcrops, seepy roadcuts, grassland seeps.
Elevation: 900–1700 m.

Discussion

Erythranthe ampliata is known from Clearwater, Lewis, and Nez Perce counties in Idaho and six western counties in Montana.
