Stems usually finely cinereous. Leaflets (7 or)9–13(or 15). Flowers: calyx (3.3–)3.7–5.3 mm, tube 2.6–3.2 × 1.7–2.6(–2.9) mm, lobes (0.6–)1–2.2 mm; corolla pale lilac, keel tip usually darker lilac; banner 9–11.5 mm; wings shorter or slightly longer than keel. Legumes folded back on itself, mostly 3-sided compressed, (20–)25–35(–40) × (2.5–)3–5.5(–6) mm. Seeds 14–24. 2n = 22.

Phenology: Flowering Apr–Jun.
Habitat: Alkaline clay or loam soils, often with sagebrush or juniper.
Elevation: 700–2100 m.

Discussion

Variety diaphanoides is known from Lassen County in California, along the Bruneau, Malheur, Owyhee, and Snake rivers in Elmore, Owyhee, and Twin Falls counties in Idaho, Washoe County in Nevada, and Deschutes, Harney, and Malheur counties in Oregon.
