Flowers: sepal apices usually obtuse, rarely acuminate; style branches 2–3 mm, equal to subequal. 2n = 28.
Phenology: Flowering May–Aug.
Habitat: Coastal plain woods, sandy soils.
Elevation: 0–20 m.

Discussion
Variety pickeringii is in the Center for Plant Conservation’s National Collection of Endangered Plants.
