Shrubs prostrate, mound-forming, 0.1–0.5 m; bark on older stems gray or red-gray, rough or shredded. Leaves: petiole to 1 mm; blade oblong-elliptic, 0.5–1.2 × 0.3–0.7 cm, base cuneate to obtuse.
Phenology: Flowering winter–early spring.
Habitat: Podsol soils in pygmy pine forests
Elevation: 100-200 m
Discussion
Of conservation concern.
Subspecies mendocinoensis is known from the coast of central Mendocino County. It intergrades with subsp. nummularia in morphology. Further analysis of its relationships is needed.
