Plants 4–10 dm. Leaves basal or sheathing; petiole (3–)5–10 cm; blade 2–5 × 3–8 cm, margins crisped. 2n = 40.


Phenology: Flowering Aug–Nov.
Habitat: Sandy to gravelly flats, slopes, and washes, saltbush and creosote bush communities
Elevation: 100-1700 m

Discussion

Variety robustius is known only from the Funeral and Black mountains of Inyo County. It is more common than var. hoffmannii, being found in the Furnace Creek and Ryan washes, and near Dante’s View.
