Shrubs, suberect to decumbent, to 1 m. Stem segments bearing oval tubercles usually 0.7–1.5 cm, larger on old stems. Spines subequal in length. 2n = 22.


Phenology: Flowering spring (Apr-early Jun).
Habitat: Coastal sage scrub, sandy soils
Elevation: 0-100 m
