Rosettes 3.5–5.5 × 4–6.5 dm. Leaves 25–42(–47) cm × 6.5–11 cm; blade ovate. Flowers 4.3–5.5(–6) cm; perianth tube 6–9 mm, limb lobes 13–21 mm; filaments 3.3–4.4 mm; ovary 2–3.4 cm. 2n = 120.
Phenology: Flowering late spring–early summer.
Habitat: Gravelly places in grasslands, chaparral, pinyon-juniper, and oak woodlands
Elevation: 1100–2100 m
Discussion
Variety couesii hybridizes with A. chrysantha in Arizona.
