Flowering stems procumbent to ascending, 20–30 cm × 2–4 mm, mostly branching proximal to middle. Sepals usually brown, occasionally maroon tinged, outer sepals shorter than inner. Seeds 2(3), 2-sided and flat or convex.
Phenology: Flowering summer; fruiting fall.
Habitat: Coastal dunes, disturbed sandy sites near coast
Elevation: 0–10 m

Del., Md., N.C., Va.
Discussion
The morphologic variation and geographic distribution of var. virginica were documented by B. A. Sorrie and A. S. Weakley (2007).
