Leaf blades oblanceolate to elliptic or ovate to obovate, 1–2 × (0.3–)0.5–1(–1.5) cm. Scapes 0.5–1.5(–2) dm, glandular at least proximal to inflorescence. Involucres turbinate-campanulate to campanulate, 3–5(–6) × 3–4.5(–5) mm, sparsely to densely floccose, occasionally sparsely glandular. Flowers 2–2.5(–3) mm; perianth glabrous or rarely weakly glandular. Achenes 1.5–2.5 mm.


Phenology: Flowering May–Jun.
Habitat: Volcanic or gumbo clay flats and slopes, saltbush and sagebrush communities, juniper woodlands
Elevation: 1300-1700(-2500) m

Discussion

Variety ochrocephalum occurs in Lassen and Modoc counties, California, and in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, Pershing, Storey, and Washoe counties, Nevada.
