Stems ascending to erect, 4–20(–25) cm, retrorsely hairy. Leaves basal and cauline, not leathery, retrorsely hairy or basal and proximal cauline sometimes glabrate or glabrous abaxially; basal and proximal cauline petiolate, 15–50(–60) × 5–18(–23) mm, blade oblanceolate to elliptic, base tapered, margins entire or remotely serrate distally, apex obtuse to acute; cauline 2–4 pairs, sessile, 15–60 × 3–8 mm, blade oblanceolate to lanceolate, rarely pandurate, base tapered to clasping, margins entire or remotely serrate, apex obtuse to acute. Thyrses continuous, cylindric to ± secund, 1–13 cm, axis glandular-pubescent, verticillasters 2–6, cymes 2- or 3(or 4)-flowered, 2 per node; proximal bracts lanceolate, rarely oblanceolate, 12–42(–76) × 1–12(–16) mm; peduncles and pedicels glandular-pubescent. Flowers: calyx lobes lanceolate, 6–10(–12) × 1.6–2.6(–3) mm, glandular-pubescent; corolla lavender to purple or pink, with reddish purple nectar guides, ventricose, 18–28 mm, densely white-lanate internally abaxially, tube (6–)8–12 mm, throat abruptly inflated, prominently constricted at orifice, 7–12 mm diam., rounded abaxially; stamens: longer pair reaching orifice, pollen sacs opposite, explanate, 0.8–1.2 mm, dehiscing completely, sutures smooth; staminode 16–18 mm, prominently exserted, 0.2–0.3 mm diam., tip coiled, distal 8–11 mm densely pilose, hairs orange or yellowish orange, to 1.3 mm; style 15–23 mm. Capsules 7–11 × 5–7 mm.

Habitat: Igneous clayey soils, sagebrush shrublands, juniper and pine-juniper woodlands.
Elevation: 1300–2300 m.

Discussion

Penstemon janishiae occurs largely in the Great Basin physiographic region. Populations have been documented in northeastern California (Lassen and Modoc counties), southwestern Idaho (Owyhee County), northern Nevada (Elko, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Nye, Washoe, and White Pine counties), and southeastern Oregon (Harney County).
