Stems glabrous or occasionally densely tomentose. Leaves glabrous or occasionally densely tomentose. Corollas glabrous or tomentose with interwoven hairs abaxially, glabrous or papillate adaxially, lobes (5–)7–9(–11) mm.

Phenology: Flowering summer; fruiting summer.
Habitat: Talus slopes, sandy or gravelly sites, often associated with Pinus ponderosa or Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Elevation: 1000–3000 m.

Discussion

Variety humilis is known primarily from the Klamath, North Coast, and High Cascade ranges and the High Sierra Nevadas of northern California, with a single collection (Callahan CH-MM-5 SP, OSC-243427) from the Cascade Range of southern Oregon (Jackson County).

Plants that are densely tomentose throughout, the hairs interwoven, have been segregated as var. tomentosa. Such plants are found scattered within populations of the typical variety, and genetic data (H. K. Brabazon 2015) support the hypothesis that the difference in pubescence is likely to be a single-gene trait.
