Shrubs, 0.3–3 m, not clonal. Stems unarmed. Leaves deciduous; blade elliptic, ovate, or subcordate, 3–5(–7) × 1–3(–4) cm, margins plane, surfaces sparsely silvery stellate-hairy abaxially with interspersed rust-brown scales, glabrate and green adaxially. Flowers: sepals yellow, 1.5–3 mm on staminate flowers, 1–2 mm on pistillate flowers; nectary disc inconspicuous. Fruits bright red or yellow, ellipsoid, 6–9 mm, fleshy, sparsely lepidote. Seeds dark brown to black, 4–5 mm. 2n = 22.
Phenology: Flowering Apr–Jun.
Habitat: Woods, open rocky slopes, sandy-gravelly shores, granitic sands.
Elevation: 0–3300 m.
