Stems branched, sometimes simple, to 12(–18) cm; branches 1–3(–5), from middle and distal, sometimes basal, nodes; cauline internode lengths 0.8–1.5 times subtending leaves. Leaves: blade +/- ovate, 2–8(–11) mm, margins serrate-dentate, teeth 2 or 3(–6) pairs, apices subacute to acute. Inflorescences densely spicate, sometimes 4-angled, beginning at node 3–5(–7); bracts light to dark green, broader than leaves, ovate to obovate, length not more than 2 times width, (4–)5–7(–9) mm, glossy, surfaces glabrous or hairy and hairs eglandular bristles on veins, teeth 4 or 5 pairs, as long as or longer than wide, apices acute, sometimes aristate, sinuses between teeth acute. Flowers: calyx lobes straight, apex acute; corolla white, adaxial lip sometimes tinged lilac, 4–5 mm, abaxial lip exceeding adaxial. Capsules oblong, 3–6 mm, apex truncate. 2n = 44 (England).
Phenology: Flowering summer.
Habitat: Grassy and gravelly places, coastal.
Elevation: 0–200 m.

N.S., Ont., Que., Maine, n Europe.
