Flowers: calyx hispid, lobes filiform; corolla: tube dark blood red; galea dark blood red, 8–13 mm, beakless, apex obtuse; abaxial lip dark blood red. 2n = 16.
Phenology: Flowering Jul–Aug.
Habitat: Subalpine edges and openings in coniferous forests.
Elevation: 1200–1600 m.
Discussion
Variety atrosanguinea is only known from the Olympic Mountains and mountains of Vancouver Island. It has solid, blood red corollas as opposed to the mostly yellow to partly purple corollas of var. bracteosa. Populations with yellow corollas, identified as var. bracteosa, have been collected from the southern Olympic Mountains in the vicinity of Mt. Steel. Both varieties are easily distinguishable by their filiform calyx lobes compared to the triangular lobes of other varieties.
