Shrubs or trees, erect, to 8 m. Stems slightly flexuous. Leaves 30–65 mm, particularly those of fast growing shoots; petiole 6–12(–17) mm, usually sparsely pubescent, hairs erect; pinnae 4–6 pairs, 18–33 mm; leaflet blades 3–6.3 mm, surfaces glabrous or glabrate abaxially. Legumes nearly terete in cross section, 30–90 mm, not constricted between seeds. Seeds biseriate or irregularly arranged. 2n = 26.
Phenology: Flowering year-round.
Habitat: Relatively moist to seasonally dry sites in thickets, open pastures, open fields, disturbed sites.
Elevation: 0–1500 m.
Distribution
Ala., Ariz., Ark., Fla., Ga., La., Miss., S.C., Tex., Mexico, West Indies, Central America, South America, introduced in Europe, Africa.
Discussion
Variety farnesiana was commonly cultivated in southern Europe for perfume made from the fragrant flowers. In southern Europe and parts of Africa, it is abundant on dry, disturbed sites, and has become a serious pest.
