Shrubs or trees, erect, to 8 m. Stems slightly flexuous. Leaves 30–65 mm, particularly those of fast growing shoots; petiole 6–12(–17) mm, usually sparsely pubescent, hairs erect; pinnae 4–6 pairs, 18–33 mm; leaflet blades 3–6.3 mm, surfaces glabrous or glabrate abax­ially. Legumes nearly terete in cross section, 30–90 mm, not constricted between seeds. Seeds biseriate or irregu­larly arranged. 2n = 26.


Phenology: Flowering year-round.
Habitat: Relatively moist to seasonally dry sites in thickets, open pastures, open fields, disturbed sites.
Elevation: 0–1500 m.

Ala., Ariz., Ark., Fla., Ga., La., Miss., S.C., Tex., Mexico, West Indies, Central America, South America, introduced in Europe, Africa.

Discussion

Variety farnesiana was commonly cultivated in south­ern Europe for perfume made from the fragrant flowers. In southern Europe and parts of Africa, it is abundant on dry, disturbed sites, and has become a serious pest.
