Herbs, 10–50 cm. Leaves ses­sile; blade usually ovate to sub­orbiculate, sometimes ellip­tic, (0.8–)1.2–2.5 × (0.5)0.7–1.6 cm, larger leaves 1.5–2 times as long as wide, base usually rounded, sometimes cuneate, surfaces glabrous. Inflorescences congested, flowers longer than internodes, ultimate branches 1–3 cm. Flowers sessile; calyx papillose outside, glabrous within; corolla white, 2–3 mm, throat with ring of hairs. Capsules 2–4 mm, horns papillose-warty on inner and outer faces. Seeds obliquely ellipsoid, 0.4 mm, smooth.


Phenology: Flowering late Jun–Sep(–early Nov).
Habitat: Wet savannas, streamhead ecotones, bogs, swamps, pocosins, other wet depressions.
Elevation: 0–200 m.

Distribution

Ala., Ark., Fla., Ga., La., Miss., N.C., Okla., S.C., Tex., Va., West Indies (Bahamas).
