Stems glabrous. Leaves alter­nate, usually not fascicled; stipules symmetrical; petioles of basal leaves 0.7–2.5 cm, those of distal leaves 0.7–6 cm; blade (2–)4–10 cm, apex eglandular-mucronate, surfaces shiny, glabrous. Flowers: anthers subequal, 1.2–1.4 mm; ovary 14–20 mm, apex somewhat broader, glabrous or with scattered hairs, stigma usually exserted beyond anthers, rarely as long as anthers. Capsules 25–40 × 3–4 mm, pedicel 35–90 mm. Seeds 16–18 per locule. 2n = 16.


Phenology: Flowering summer-early fall.
Habitat: Wet places, along slow-moving rivers, streams, canals, ditches, often growing into main channels as aquatic weeds.
Elevation: 0–900[–3000] m.
