Stems simple or branched, to 18 cm; branches 1–4 pairs, from middle or distal cauline nodes; cauline internode lengths 2–3 times leaves. Leaves: blade ovate or elliptic, 3–10 mm, margins serrate, teeth 1–5 pairs, apices subacute to acute. Inflorescences sparsely spicate, not 4-angled, beginning at node 7–11; bracts green, purple, or blackish purple, broader than leaves, oblong to ovate, length not more than 2 times width, 4–8 mm, glossy, margins ciliate, surfaces glabrous and hairs eglandular, teeth 3–5 pairs, longer than wide, apices acute. Flowers: corolla white to violet, 4.5–6.5 mm, lips +/- equal. Capsules oblong or elliptic, 4–5.5 mm, apex truncate to retuse. 2n = 44 (Iceland).
Phenology: Flowering summer–fall.
Habitat: Grassy places, roadsides, abandoned railways and gravel pits, disturbed shorelines, wood margins.
Elevation: 0–1200 m.
Distribution
Introduced; N.S., Ont., Mass., Europe.
