Herbs or subshrubs. Stems ascending to erect, 13–50 cm, retrorsely hairy, hairs pointed, not glaucous. Leaves essentially cauline, opposite, retrorsely hairy, hairs pointed, sometimes glabrate, not glaucous; cauline 5–8 pairs, petiolate or sessile, 22–80 × (1–)2–9 mm, blade oblanceolate to lanceolate or linear, base tapered, margins entire, apex obtuse to acute. Thyrses interrupted, cylindric, 4–14 cm, axis glandular-pubescent, verticillasters (3 or)4–8(–12), cymes 1–5-flowered, 2 per node; proximal bracts lanceolate, 5–40 × 1–4 mm; peduncles and pedicels ascending to erect, glandular-pubescent. Flowers: calyx lobes ovate to lanceolate, 3.8–7 × 1.4–2.6 mm, glandular-pubescent; corolla blue to violet or purple, without nectar guides, funnelform, 15–25 mm, glandular-pubescent externally, glabrous internally, tube 6–8 mm, throat gradually inflated, 6–9 mm diam., slightly 2-ridged abaxially; stamens included, filaments glabrous, pollen sacs parallel, 1.5–2 mm, distal 1/2 indehiscent, sides hispidulous, hairs white, to 0.5 mm near filament attachment, sutures denticulate, teeth to 0.2 mm; staminode 12–15 mm, reaching orifice, 0.5–1 mm diam., glabrous; style 13–17 mm. Capsules (5.5–)7–9 × (3–)4–6 mm.
Phenology: Flowering May–Aug.
Habitat: Sagebrush shrublands, juniper woodlands, pine forests.
Elevation: 600–2500 m.

Calif., Nev., Oreg.
Discussion
Penstemon roezlii occurs from north-central Oregon (Wheeler County) to central California (Inyo and Tulare counties) and northwestern Nevada (Storey and Washoe counties). Populations are concentrated in the Cascade and Klamath ranges, the High Sierra Nevada, and the Modoc Plateau and East Cascades.
