Shrubs to 2 m. Leaves: blade linear-oblanceolate or oblanceolate, 15–25 × 3–5 mm, length 5 times width, pliable, base tapering to petiole, margins often thickened, not revolute, apex obtuse, mucronate, surfaces glabrous. Inflorescences cymose panicles. Flowers: sepals narrowly triangular, 1 mm; petals oblong, 2 mm. Fruits 4–5 mm.


Phenology: Flowering winter–spring; fruiting summer-fall.
Habitat: Thickets, gravelly hills.
Elevation: 0–100 m.

Discussion

In the flora area, Mortonia greggii occurs in the lower Rio Grande valley in Hidalgo and Starr counties.
