|discussion=<p><i>Schoenoplectus subterminalis</i> often forms lawnlike, underwater mats that are entirely vegetative or have only the inflorescences emergent. This species is probably extirpated from Illinois. <i>Schoenoplectus subterminalis</i> var. terrestris Paine [= <i>S. subterminalis</i> forma terrestris (Paine) Fernald] probably does not deserve taxonomic recognition.</p>
