--><p><i>Chorizanthe howellii</i> is an octoploid probably derived from an ancient hybrid event involving <i>C. cuspidata </i>var.<i> villosa</i> and perhaps <i>C. valida</i>. It is known only from a dune area north of Fort Bragg in Mendocino County, and is federally listed as endangered.</p>
