Pennell (1951) that covered the majority of the western North American species of <i>Erythranthe</i>. A floristic treatment of <i>Mimulus</i> in the broad sense for California by D. M. Thompson (1993) recognized fewer species of <i>Erythranthe</i> than did Pennell, especially in sects. Achlyopitheca, Mimulosma, and Simiolus. Vickery and his students, who made hundreds of chromosome counts and interspecific and infraspecific crosses and from those data drew corresponding inferences about isolating mechanisms.
