Herbs 3–5(–6) dm, densely silvery-tomentose. Branches mod­erately to strongly zig­zag. Leaves: stipules ovate to lance­olate, 1.5–5.5 × 0.7–2.4 cm, base cuneate to cor­date; petiole 1–2 cm; leaflet blades elliptic to narrowly so, 3–6.5(–7.5) × 1.2–3.5(–3.8) cm, apex acute to obtuse, short-mucronate. Peduncles 2–6(–9) cm; bracts ovate to nearly lanceolate, 6–11 × 3.5–6 mm. Racemes 10–30-flowered, 7–20(–30) cm. Flowers: calyx 5–8(–9) × 5–8 mm at limb, lobes 3–5 mm; petals: banner shallowly emarginate or short-mucronate, wings and keel oblong-elliptic; ovules 5–7. Legumes 2–4 × 0.6–0.7 cm. Seeds 1 or 2 (fully matured not seen).


Phenology: Flowering Apr–Jun.
Habitat: Grassy oak woodlands.
Elevation: 1000–1500 m.

Discussion

Variety semota is restricted to interior portions of San Diego County.
