Variety heterodoxus is known from the Klamath Range, Sierra Nevada, and Inyo and White mountains in east-central California and west-central Nevada. Populations are partly geographically sympatric with those of var. shastensis, which occurs to the north, and with those of var. cephalophorus, which occurs to the south.
