Herbage usually silky-canescent, hirsute, sometimes ascending-hirsute, hairs appressed. Leaves (2–)5–17(–23) cm; stipules thinly to densely pilose abaxially; leaflets (5–)9–19, blades linear, linear-lanceolate, or narrowly oblong, 5–40 mm. Peduncles 4.5–25 cm, axis 3–15 cm in fruit. Racemes 6–18-flowered. Calyces 7–10 mm, tube 5.5–8 mm, lobes 1.5–4 mm. Corollas usually pink-purple, rarely white, 15–20 mm. Legumes sessile, 8–15 mm, 2+ times as long as calyx, stiffly leathery or woody. 2n = 48.
Phenology: Flowering spring–early summer.
Habitat: Prairies, bluffs, badlands.
Elevation: 300–1500 m.
