Plants usually robust. Leaves 3–12 cm; rachis 2–9 cm, longer than longest leaflet; leaflets 9–19, 10–18 mm, scattered along rachis. Peduncles erect, 9–19 cm, usually surpassing leaves, axis 2–8 cm in fruit. Racemes 7–20-flowered, loose. Calyces 9–13 mm, hispid-hirsute, hairs ascending-spreading. Corollas 17–25 mm. Legumes short-stipitate, scarcely to strongly inflated.
Phenology: Flowering spring–early summer.
Habitat: Hilltops, bluffs, banks, sagebrush, grasslands, sand, gravel.
Elevation: 1000–2900 m.

Discussion
Variety besseyi is similar to Oxytropis lambertii, with which it is occasionally confused; it differs in its hispid-villous calyces, thin-walled fruits, and basifixed hairs.
