Stems sprawling or climbing, 4–8 dm. Leaves 5–8 cm, termi­nating in well-developed, usu­ally branched tendril; leaflets 8–10, blades usually lanceolate, rarely linear, 30–70 × 5–20 mm. Inflorescences 3–9 cm. Flowers 10–15 mm, corolla blue-purple, banner retuse to shallowly cor­date. 2n = 14, 28.

Phenology: Flowering Mar–Jun.
Habitat: Parkland, thickets, sagebrush, juniper, pine, and aspen woodlands.
Elevation: 900–3100 m.

Discussion

Variety lanszwertii is found in northern California, western Colorado, central Idaho, western Nevada, eastern Oregon, the Wasatch Mountains of northeastern Utah, southeastern Washington, and north-central Wyoming.
