Stems and leaves dry or turgid, not succulent. Receptacles 5–8 mm diam. Cypselae 2.3–3 mm, nerves 10–12. 2n = 40.
Phenology: Flowering summer–early fall.
Habitat: Usually semidisturbed sites in open woods

Discussion
Variety hieraciifolius is highly variable and mildly weedy. In the flora area, it occurs naturally from Quebec to Florida and westward to about the limits of the eastern deciduous forest; it is sporadically adventive on the West Coast and elsewhere in temperate regions.
