Herbs perennial, caulescent; caudex superficial or shallowly subterranean. Hairs basifixed. Stems clustered or several to many. Stipules distinct. Leaves odd-pinnate, sessile or subsessile to short-petiolate; leaflets (5 or)7–17(–21). Racemes loosely flowered, sometimes initially densely flowered, flowers ascending. Calyx tubes campanulate to subcylindric. Corollas whitish or lilac-tinged, banner recurved through 40–45°, keel apex obtuse. Legumes eventually deciduous, stipitate, pendulous or horizontally spreading, lunately to falcately ellipsoid or oblong, incurved or coiled, laterally compressed, with protruding sutures, or subterete, unilocular. Seeds (14–)20–36.

Section Podosclerocarpi consists of species from the Columbia Basin in interior Washington, extreme northeastern Oregon, and southern British Columbia.
