Discussion
In California, var. glaber is present in the North Coast and North Coast Ranges to the San Francisco Bay area, the foothills of the northern Sierra Nevada, the South Coast, and the Western Transverse and Peninsular ranges. It is sporadic inland, where it is possibly introduced. A generally erect shrub, it may become trailing in the shade or mat-forming on beaches. Confusion may occur between coastal forms and plants of Acmispon cytisoides and A. junceus. D. Isely (1981) reported possible hybrids with A. cytisoides (as Lotus benthamii), A. junceus (A. glaber as L. scoparius var. perplexans Hoover), and A. decumbens.
Hosackia crassifolia Torrey & A. Gray 1838 (not Bentham 1836) is an illegitimate name that pertains here.
