Discussion

Variety helleri is the only Acmispon present east of the Appalachian Mountains. Although sometimes recognized at the species level (for example, B. A. Sorrie 2015), differences with var. americanus appear insufficient to warrant species status. The report by P. Lesica (2012) of this variety in Colorado is probably based on specimens of var. americanus.
